Titans' Mawae to become NFLPA president

Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at 2:00pm

Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae will soon take over as the president of the NFL Players Association.

Mawae, a 14-year veteran with the Titans, New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks, has long been active in the NFLPA and would succeed current president Troy

Vincent, who was not on an active roster last season.

Mawae, 37, has been part of the association’s executive committee since 2002.

“It’s a heck of an honor, and something I think he’s very much deserving of,” Mawae’s agent Mark Bartelstein said. “He’s so respected throughout the league. I think he’ll do terrific in that role.

“He’s everything you’d look for in an NFL player. He’s so respected by his peers, so it’s not surprising to me for him to get that opportunity.”

A representative at the NFLPA office did not have an official confirmation, but said a report on NFL Network that Mawae was the likely successor to Vincent was correct.

An official announcement is expected to come sometime this week.

I wonder how much crap KW caught after calling out VY at the end of last year. He shot it straight on 104.5 one morning giving all the gory details of how ill prepared VY is, and how poor he is in the huddle, etc... I bet he got his tail roasted by Fisher.

In that conversation he said when VY called a play to the right and it should have been to the left or whatever he did wrong someone in the huddle should have stepped up. Well, Kevin himself was in most of those huddles, so why didn't he step up?

I would think Mawae did step up, he's been in the league for 14 years and has no reason to keep his mouth shut with VY. I heard the interview and I think his point on 104.5 may have been that he and the coaches and other players had told VY this stuff already and VY wasn't listening. I didn't really have any problem with what Mawae said, not because I don't like VY, I just think Mawae was speaking his mind and he was telling his QB how to be better QB. I'm glad McClain didn't hear the interview, he would have defended VY and said it was everyone else's fault but VY's.
