INDIANAPOLIS _ Tennessee Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt met with free agent tight end Alge Crumpler and his agent, James Williams here at the NFL Combine before Crumpler and Williams were scheduled to fly home Friday evening.
Crumpler, 30, caught 35 passes for the Falcons last season, but was released last week, giving teams a chance to negotiate with him before the unrestricted free agency period opens on Feb. 29.
Crumpler and the Titans have expressed mutual interest in each other, though a number of teams have inquired about the veteran tight end since his release.
The Titans are looking to add to a thinning tight end ranks as free agent Ben Troupe will not be back and Ben Hartsock is a free agent whom Tennessee might retain.
Crumpler had several strong seasons with the Falcons as a safety blanket type receiver for Michael Vick, and the Titans believe he could perform the same type of role for Vince Young.
MEETING TIME: The Titans met with East Carolina running back Chris Johnson at the Combine as they continue to look for a complementary speed back to go with LenDale White.
Johnson is also a kickoff returner, and the Titans have a need at that position as well.
“They’ve shown me a lot of interest. [I met with them] last night. It went real good,” Johnson said.
