A day after the Tennessee Titans rolled over the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-14 to clinch home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, the accomplishment has been overshadowed by Towel-gate.
Late in the game, Titans linebacker Keith Bulluck, tight end Bo Scaife and running back LenDale White stomped on Steelers Terrible Towels. Another photo showed defensive end Jevon Kearse blowing his nose on one of the yellow towels.
Earlier in the game, running back Chris Johnson had pulled out a white towel from his uniform and began swinging it after scoring the touchdown that put the Titans ahead for good at 17-14. That was done in retaliation for so many Steelers fans who invaded the crowd at LP Field and waved them throughout the contest.
The Titans improved to 13-2, equaling the most wins in a single season in franchise history, but thanks in part to the players’ sideline actions and the reaction by former Steelers coach and CBS studio analyst Bill Cowher, Towel-gate took over the headlines.
The Associated Press quoted Cowher Monday from his post-game comments, admonishing White and Bulluck for their on-camera actions.
"That looks like a pre-game talk the night before to me," Cowher said. "If (we'd) meet in the postseason, I know what I'm pulling out the night before the game."
He said of White, "You've got to learn ... I wouldn't do this, I wouldn't go there" and that Bulluck should know better than to do that, because "You are a veteran, Bulluck."
On the day after, Titans coach Jeff Fisher insisted that the towel is simply a piece of yellow cloth to his players, and certainly nothing hallowed like it is in Pittsburgh. Still, he indicated that excessive celebrating might have been unneeded.
“We’re not about those things, but I really think this: To our players, that’s just a towel. That’s all it is is a towel,” Fisher said. “They don’t understand the significance or the meaning of the towel itself to the organization, the Steelers history or the Steeler fans.
“So on one hand, I think they’re just playing with a towel. It’s not a shot at the organization, the staff or the fans. Our players have great respect for the Pittsburgh Steelers and what they’ve accomplished. Our players were talking about it in the locker room afterwards about what a good football team that was. This was just a couple of guys playing around with a towel. It was unnecessary in my opinion.”
After the game, Bulluck was unrepentant, but said he did not mean it as a slap to the Steelers organization.
“I really don’t care and it’s not disrespect to the Pittsburgh Steeler players or anything like that because there are a lot of great football players over there and coaches that I have a tremendous amount of respect for,” Bulluck said. “But that’s just our stand. Anybody that’s going to come through here in the playoffs, we plan to stomp them out. That has to be our stand.”
Steelers cornerback Deshea Townsend said it would be up to the Steelers to take care of business in any potential rematch that would come on Jan. 18 in the AFC Championship Game if both teams advance that far.
“Hopefully, if we do see them again we can right the wrong and not allow them to step on that towel,” Townsend said. “I am sure they are very emotional over there. I am sure it was good to win and show a little respect for our towel. We won’t forget it. I will say that.”
Fisher said he was unaware of the incident immediately after the game, and said it won’t be a big deal in any rematch.
“To be honest with you, I didn’t know it had taken place until I got in this morning. I wasn’t aware of it after the game,” Fisher said. “I didn’t pay much attention to it. If we’re fortunate enough to see Pittsburgh again, and that’s the motivation they need to play better, then that’s OK.”
As for Johnson, who was fined $10,000 after playing drums in the end zone after a touchdown in Kansas City, Fisher said he could potentially be fined again for pulling his towel out and waving after his 21-yard touchdown run.
“It potentially could be a problem, but it was his towel. It’s not like he took the towel out from the back of his pads and waved it, but the rule states that you can’t use the ball as a prop or props,” Fisher said. “If you’re doing something different with it than you ordinarily do, then it could be perceived as a penalty.”
Perhaps there will be a reward for Johnson, who received a set of drums after the Chiefs incident.
“When he pounded the drums, he got a free drum set. So maybe he’s trying to get something else. Maybe he’s out of paper towels at his house. Who knows?” Fisher said.
INJURIES: Fisher said center Kevin Mawae, who suffered an elbow injury in Sunday’s game, is still being evaluated.
He indicated that he elbow was not dislocated, and certainly not season-ending.
“We’re still doing some tests and evaluating him. I’m more concerned about whether he’ll play this week or not. It was not dislocated,” Fisher said.
If Mawae does not play, Leroy Harris, who finished up for him Sunday, will start. The decision then would be whether to put Harris at guard and slide Eugene Amano over to center.
“Leroy did fine. Leroy is more than capable of playing for us up front,” Fisher said. “If Kevin is in a situation where he’s questionable for the ballgame, then it would make sense that we give Leroy and opportunity. Now whether we would put Leroy at guard or center, that’s a decision we would have to make.”
STILL EVALUATING: Fisher said he is still evaluating how much to play his starters in the regular-season finale at Indianapolis, where neither the Titans nor Colts have anything on the line in terms of playoff seeding.
Just as Tennessee clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC Sunday, the Colts wrapped up the No. 5 seed and will face the Denver-San Diego winner on wild-card weekend.
“As far as our approach to playing different players, we’re not there yet. We’ll have to wait and see,” Fisher said. “Everybody is going to play. If they’re healthy, they’ll play. I can’t predict what coach [Tony] Dungy is going to do with his club. All we can do is go in there and play and try to win the ballgame.”
YOUNG TO PLAY: Fisher did say that starting quarterback Kerry Collins would give way to Vince Young at some point in the game against the Colts.
“I would say there is a pretty good chance Vince is going to get in the ballgame,” Fisher said. “How much I don’t know right now. But I think there’s a good chance he’ll get in the ballgame.”
Fisher wouldn’t say whether or not third-stringer Chris Simms, who has not seen regular season action since 2006 when he ruptured his spleen, would play.
CHRISTMAS OFF: The Titans will not practice on Thursday, giving players the day off with their families.
Wow, the Steelers are crying about some yellow towels? They are the whiniest franchise I've ever heard of.
Yep, pretty pathetic.
Actually, it's the media making a mountain out of a molehill. It's not the American Flag for goodness sakes. It's just a yellow towel. The same color, I might add, that the snow turns when I write my name in it.Time to move on people. Nothing to see here.
Usually these type of things come back to haunt a team in the future. Hope not though.
Note to the steelers:The hospital called, you have to return the yellow diapers. The new-borns have nothing to s**t in.
Titans players like to stomp. It's just good to see them move from a players head to a bunch of harmless fan towels. It probably will come back to haunt them, things like this usually do. If it does, let's see how imbiciles like Titan1 react.
OMG...the first time you guys finally win and look at you!!! its just that us STEELERS are so used to winning and then your team acts sooo immature. we're sorry your team doesnt have anything to represent the loyalty of your city or fans like Pittsburgh does...EVERYONE, everywhere loves the Steelers and Bulluck doesnt even have the "footballs" to say why he played with our towel...he said he didnt mean anything...lol The titans will never compare to the STEELERS...black and gold rule.
Hey wait...thats right, your team has nothing because it didnt use to be YOUR team....hmmmm, does TEXAS sound familiar???Ha, a new team for a country and western town...no wait, I think the cowboys are another city..hmmmm....Let me think...what does your team have for a motto??? that everyone everywhere knows them by??? NOTHING
One more thing..how many superbowls have you guys won so far? playoffs? just silly little new boys getting excited...they make things for that
and what does your team have,,,lets see a quarterback that fumbles ,,,,a quarterback that throws interceptions.....lets see what do the titans haveee?????HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE!!!!!
Didn't the Titans have home field in 2000? How'd that work out for you?
no this is a first ,,,through out the play offs for our games,,,they are played in nashville
No, it isn't. They had homefield throughout the playoffs in 2000 with a 13-3 record and lost at home to the Ravens.
Yes, indeed gdiafante I remember home field advantage well in 2000. Ray Lewis and Al Del Greco beat the Titans by themselves. That was probably the best Titan team since coming to Tennessee. To my knowledge after the worst individual performance by a kicker Al Del Greco never kicked for another team. (thank god) He spends his time now playing golf and trying to undermind the Auburn football program,
old al needs to stick to golf.....i am so proud ,,,and we do have a good shot at the super bowl especially with home field!!!!
steelergirl. the past doesnt matter. I was downtown saturday night on 2nd ave and their were so many steelers jersys. You are right Steelers do have the biggest fan base. I didn’t realize it until I was downtown that night. I swear I seen at least 200 Steelers jerseys and fans within the 3 hours I was down there. I went in a few of the clubs and there were steeler fans being loud and disrespectful that night. I almost got into an altercation with one of them outside of Graham central station. He was very very cocky and arrogant. How are you going to come to our city and act like that. Then I went to one of the after hour spots, Nocturnal, and there were at least 20 Steelers fans in there from Pittsburg. And most of them were being real disrespectful. And I’m not the only one who noticed it. So I say the Steelers got what was coming to them. It was a towel. Get over it. The road to the superbowl goes through Nashville. Titans will be a force to reckon with for the next few years. Mark my words.
The past is prologue. There were plenty of Steelers fans at the Preds game Saturday night too. They were very respectful and enthusiastic about their team. I heard many off-color remarks by Titans fans about them though, and even had to explain to my daughter that the language was not appropriate and that even adults can act like children occassionally. The one thing about the Titans that I never could stand...the fans.
Oh and one good thing to come out of this, i see a Titans and Steelers rivalry in the making. Watch what i tell you. We dont play eachother alot, but this will certainly cause a strong rivalry with the two teams. Everytime!
i have always heard the the steelers fans are one of the nastiest teams in football,,,even up there with oakland..yes i too was there for the game and yes they were very disrespectful,,unlike most visitors that are very nice...it is just a stupid towel...a towel and they want to talk about t-rac...whom i may add is a pro bowl mascot...is the towel a probowl towel HA!HA!
This is media-driven fluff. A towel is a rag, regardless of color. To steelergirl: wave your rag, as you should, but if some of the Titan players and fans get a hold of it, especially at LP field, they can do what they damn well want to do with them. Quit your whining. As for you, I suggest sticking it in your mouth.
I want one of them little fellers that are peeing on the Pittsburgh fans !!!!! atta boy Jokapsig.... wrap it around her big ole butt... cause I didn`t see a steeler women fan under 275 lbs. What a bunch of HOGS
we are just as proud of the titans as they are the steelers even though we have the upper hand ,there is no reason to be so up in the air over a stupid,i repeat stupid towel
Home Field Advantage (HFA) in the play-offs, ESPECIALLY IN THE AFC, does not guarantee success in the post-season. Since the end of the Buffalo Bills' Dynasty in the early '90's, only FOUR teams with HFA in the AFC had advanced to the Super Bowl (2003 & 2007 Patriots, 2002 Raiders & 1998 Broncos), with only the 2003 Patriots and 1998 Broncos winning the Super Bowl. Four teams (the Steelers in 1994, 2001 & 2007 and the 1999 Jagaurs) lost the AFC Championship Game and SIX teams (2006 Chargers, 2005 Colts, 2000 Titans, 1996 Broncos and the Chiefs in 1997 & 1995) DIDN'T EVEN WIN A SINGLE PLAY-OFF GAME. And remeember, the last three Super Bowl Winners (2007 Giants, 2006 Colts & 2005 Steelers) didn't even get a first round bye.
Loso, the Titans and Steelers have always had a rivalry, they were in the same division for YEARS.
"Quit your whining. As for you, I suggest sticking it in your mouth.""It's just a yellow towel. The same color, I might add, that the snow turns when I write my name in it.""The hospital called, you have to return the yellow diapers. The new-borns have nothing to s**t in.""cause I didn`t see a steeler women fan under 275 lbs. What a bunch of HOGS"See what I mean? Classy fans here in Nashville.
gdiafante, i know that. But not as Titans. So i guess i mean a new rekindled rivalry. lol
it's a chance you take,,,if you ask me it is time for new blood....i don't know about every one else i am sick oh hearing this garbage.peyton this eli that...garbage!!!!
.. hey but its ok. Because come the Superbowl the Steelers fans will be rooting for the titans to represent the AFC! :)
your right, unless they can't do that because they left the towel at home!!
gd, I guess you think you are classy with all your bitter stupid ass remarks. You are a fish out of water in Titan Town and it eats you up. Give it up and while you are at it, get a sense of humor. You can't even support your team without trying to trash the home town team, sheesh~!
gd- The Tennessee Titan fans are the classiest and the best. Fact! Steelergirl was ragging us (no pun intended) and our team. What planet are you from? You obviously haven't been to games at other NFL cities and seen their fans in action. If you had, you wouldn't make such wussy comments.
have supported this team even when they were oilers and when the opposing team is nasty and all up in air over a stupid towel,,,when they should focus on their games that is toooooo much, nashville is a respected host for all the teams and plan to stay that way!!!!!
Maybe steelergirl should make the switch from a towel to a Shamwow, I bet they soak up more tears! Next time, maybe the Pittsburgh fans shouldn't throw their laundry on the field.
they are just mad because big ben throw the game away....at least the titans really want it....
Lol! Good one, house_of_pain!
titan1 i like you obviously you think and defend your team as i do ..
"You obviously haven't been to games at other NFL cities and seen their fans in action. If you had, you wouldn't make such wussy comments."Actually I have, that is why I can compare. Have you?Titan, are you ten? I know you're the obvious result of incest, but how old are you?
obviously i have!!!!there are no really bad fans till you go to oakland,,,pittsburg,,,,and indy,,,so suck it up and get over it....we have HOMEFIELD!!!!
Indy??? LOL!!! They are some of the nicest fans you'll meet! I agree with Philly, they are quite nasty, and Oakland is...well Oakland.
and i am a heck of alot older then you think and probably been a football fan a lot longer.trash talk don't get it .if you want to do that go back to the city it belongs in and stay out of ours
53 gd, a rabid Titan fan with a sense of humor.
56 and you are right ,,,NEVER!!!NEVER PUT MY TEAM DOWN!!!!
Rah rah sis boom bah
Ok, I've hung out at the geriatric wing long enough. Good day.
Try to find that sense of humor while you are at it.
here is the deal those towels are no worse then some things people insinuate on the posters in the crowd. I think they are just being sissy's because they lost and they need to suck it up. This is the year for the Titans to make a come back from all the bad talk about us. (you didnt see us crying when we lost)!!!!!
your right!!!one year i was ithe stand in the first year vince was a quarterback cowboys,,,,,one on one side of me one in back of me,,,remarks like get a real quarterback,,,go back to the crib,,finally i had had enough and turned to them,of (of course this was at the time that TO did not take the drugs)i stated the fact that vince was a young maan trying to do a mans job and doing it quite well and at least we did,nt have drugges and dopers trying to play the game....she sat down and shut up the rest of the game and this was just once ,,there has been many more,,,i bleed blue!!!
my, my, my, aren't you all in an uproar over my comments to you...im laughing, thatswhats funny....you titans are loyal which is good, but you are the disreprectful ones. as for rivalry, ours will always be the browns...not tennessee??? since when???pittsburgh is known for having a steel curtain, tough defense, ok, big ben screwed up this past game, they're all human, but you guys act like its your first win. im laughing, how many superbowl rings do we have? add another, the steelers will always rule, say what you want.
i have seen my team through the bad and i have seen them through the good ..i am not a band wagoner.the other teams with the BIG FRANCHISES DON"T HAVE TO PROVE WHAT A BAD FAN THEY ARE!!!!!! SUCK IT UP!!!!!
oh, and by the way, im 5'7 and 150 lbs.northern girls are the best, not farm hands and prissy fake hair and nails southern girls...
