Two NCAA Tournament teams and two other NIT qualifiers join Tennessee in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off this upcoming season.
On Wednesday the field for the eight-team men’s basketball tournament on Nov. 15-18 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, was announced. In addition to the Vols, the field includes Akron, UMass, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Providence and UNC-Asheville.
N.C. State is coming off a trip to the Sweet 16 and UNC-Asheville nearly knocked off No. 1 seed Syracuse in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. UMass reached the Final Four of the NIT. Akron, along with Tennessee, earned a bid to the NIT.
Under first-year coach Cuonzo Martin, Tennessee finished the 2011-12 season with a 19-15 record, tied for second place in the Southeastern Conference and reached the second round of the NIT before losing to Middle Tennessee State.
The Vols visited Hawaii in 2011 for the Maui Invitational and will add to their travels in August when they take a team trip to Italy.
