Vanderbilt earns No. 3 seed for Southeastern Conference tournament

Vanderbilt will be the No. 3. seed for the Southeastern Conference Tournament, which opens Thursday in New Orleans.

The Commodores (21-10) received one of four first-round byes and will play either No. 6 seed Mississippi State or No. 11 Georgia at 9 p.m. Friday (SEC Network).

Vanderbilt, which dropped its final regular-season game to Tennessee on Saturday, lost to Mississippi State (21-10) at home in January and swept the season series against Georgia (14-16).

The Volunteers, who were picked to finish 11th in the SEC, finished with a 10-6 league record and tied Vanderbilt and Florida for second place.

Tennessee won three of four against the Commodores and Gators and earned the No. 2 seed. The Volunteers (18-13), who have won eight of nine, will play No. 7 Ole Miss or No. 10 Auburn at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Vanderbilt will be a good opponent for other tournament teams. A pre-season number seven team will bring out the best in opponents.

It all depends upon how badly the Seniors want it. They have the capability of beating everyone except, perhaps, Kentucky. But if they have the same energy level and concentration as last Saturday, it will be a short tourney.
