Vanderbilt rallies for extra-inning victory at Louisville

LOUISVILLE – Curt Casali scored from third base on a double play in the top of the 10th and lifted Vanderbilt to a 4-3 victory over Louisville on Wednesday.

Casali led off the 10th with a double. He moved to third on Aaron Westlake’s single and scored when Joe Loftus grounded into a double play.

Loftus forced extra innings when he scored the tying run in the top of the ninth. He came home on bases-loaded walk by Brian Harris with two out. Loftus led off ninth with a single, advanced to second on a bunt and moved to third on a wild pitch.

Harris had all three VU RBIs. He drove in the first run with a double in the third and the second when he reached on a fielder’s choice in the fifth.

Nine different Commodores had a hit, led by Westlake who had a pair of singles.

Sonny Gray and Russell Brewer held Louisville scoreless over 3.2 innings as Vanderbilt snapped a four-game losing streak.

Brewer got the win. He did not allow a base runner and struck out three in 1.2 innings. Mike Minor replaced Brewer and recorded the final out and a save. It was Minor’s first relief appearance since 2007.

Vanderbilt will host Mississippi State in a three-game SEC series this weekend.

I am proud of this Commodore team. Coming back the day after there loss to the commuter school Austin Peay shows the character of this team.
