LOUISVILLE – Freshman Sonny Gray pitched eight scoreless innings and Steven Liddle drove in three runs as Vanderbilt defeated Indiana 10-0 in an NCAA regional elimination contest on Saturday.
Gray struck out 10, allowed seven hits (all singles) and walked one. He did not allow a runner past first base in his final three innings.
Indiana’s most significant threat came in the top of the fifth when it loaded the bases with no outs. Gray got out of that with back-to-back strikeouts and then a ground out to protect a 3-0 lead.
Vanderbilt (35-26) then broke open the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, which included a two-RBI single by Liddle, a sophomore. Liddle was 3-for-5 with a double, one run scored and three RBIs.
Freshman Riley Reynolds was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and one RBI. He led off the fifth with a single and scored on Jonathan White’s single.
White was 2-for-4 and was hit by a pitch. He scored three runs.
Brian Harris led off the game with a home run and put the Commodores ahead to stay.
Indiana (32-27) got two hits in the ninth off relief pitcher Taylor Hill but ultimately was shut out for the first time in 40 games.
