Marina Alex fell just short of her second SEC championship.

The Vanderbilt senior finished one stroke behind Auburn’s Patricia Sanz and took second at the SEC Championship on Sunday in Fayetteville, Ark.

Alex, who won the 2010 individual title, posted a final round of 77 to finish with a 220 (70-73-77). Junior Lauren Stratton finished in a tie for eighth with a 229 (77-74-78).

The Commodores finished eighth as a team, three strokes behind Auburn.

“It would have been nice to bring home a bigger trophy for Marina, but like I’ve said throughout the week, this was a hard golf course,” Vanderbilt coach Greg Allen said. “These conditions were as tough as I've seen, and it was nice to see Marina grind out a good performance this week.

“We're not going to let the numbers get us down.  We hit a lot of quality shots this week that on most courses would have been great.  But here, not.”

The Vanderbilt men tied for ninth at the SEC Championship in Sea Island, Ga. Sophomore Charlie Ewing paced the Commodores with a score of 215 (74-70-71) to tie for 23rd.
