Derrick Byars and Shan Foster each scored 24 points to lead Vanderbilt to a stunning 83-70 upset victory over No. 1 Florida on Saturday at Memorial Gym.

It was VU's first win over a top-ranked team since beating Kentucky on Jan. 13, 1993.

"This is one for the ages," Byars said. "Twenty years from now, I'll be able to tell my little kids this. This is special. You can't explain it."

Vanderbilt (18-8, 8-4 SEC) shot 57.1 percent from the field and held the Gators (24-3, 11-1) to 44.0 percent.

Florida, defending national champions, saw its 17-game winning streak come to an end.

With four regular-season games remaining, the Commodores appear on the verge of securing their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2004.

More details on the game will appear in Monday's edition of The City Paper.
