Vandy topples nation's No. 1 team, 7-3

The No. 8 Vanderbilt baseball squad opened the 2007 season Friday by knocking off top-ranked Rice 7-3 at the Houston Astros College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

The Commodores erupted for four runs in the seventh inning and two in the eighth to overcome an early deficit.

Tyler Rhoden picked up in the win in relief of starter David Price. Shea Robin and Matt Meingasner hit home runs for VU.

The Commodores take on Arizona State on Saturday and Baylor on Sunday. Look for a complete weekend wrap in Monday's editon of The City Paper.
