Parker Hanks hit a solo home run, Mike Minor struck out six batters in six innings of work and the No. 3-ranked Vanderbilt baseball team defeated No. 7-ranked and two-time defending national champion Oregon State 8-1 Friday afternoon at the DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Vanderbilt's Ryan Flaherty added four runs batted in, including a two-run single in the first inning. Caleb Cotham pitched the final three innings in relief and yielded no runs.

The Commodores will play Arizona State on Saturday and Miami [Ohio] on Sunday before returning to Nashville for next Wednesday's home opener.
