Marina Alex, Vanderbilt’s No.1 golfer this spring as a freshman, earned a spot in the U.S. Women’s Open when she finished fourth in sectional qualifying on Tuesday.

Alex, from Wayne Hills N.J., shot rounds of 75 and 78 Neshanic Valley Golf Club in Neshanic Station, N.J. She earned her way into that field when she was the medalist in an 18-hole local qualifying event, June 2 in North Carolina.

Only four players advanced from the Neshanic Valley event, and Alex was four shots better than the fifth-place finisher.

In May, she was the Commodores’ lone qualifier for the NCAA Championship, where she finished tied for 37th following a final-round 69.

"I've been playing really well lately, from SEC's to now,” she said. “I've been happy with the way things have been going.”

Two other VU golfers, Andrea Messer and incoming freshman Anna Leigh Keith, also made the sectional qualifying round. Neither made it in the Open field.

The U.S. Women’s Open will take place July 9-12 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
