SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Vanderbilt scored six of the final eight goals but lost 19-13 to Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA lacrosse tournament on Sunday.

The No. 12 Commodores (10-7) led twice in the early going (2-1 and 3-2) on goals by Ally Carey, who also assisted on Allie Franks’ goal, which tied it 4-4 with 13:10 remaining in the first period.

Notre Dame (19-11), broke the tie and went ahead to stay with a 13-3 run, which included the first four goals of the second period.

Sarah Downing, VU’s leading scorer during the season, snapped that stretch and started the Commodores’ run when she scored her second, with 20:26 to play.

Vanderbilt outshot Notre Dame 14-10 in the second half, and scored the final three goals, one each by Carey, Frank and Downing. The Irish, however, had a 24-8 edge in first-half shots.

Carey finished with three goals and an assist, Downing had three goals, and Carter Foote had one goal and four assists.
