Young meets with Fisher to discuss Titans future

INDIANAPOLIS - While the Tennessee Titans are expending their efforts to re-sign Kerry Collins and Chris Simms, Vince Young was in Nashville last week talking to Coach Jeff Fisher about his future.

“I visited with Vince last week, and we had a good conversation,” Fisher said. “He’s got a little distance between the season, and he’s anxious and wanted to know what he has to do to earn his starting job back. He’s willing to do whatever it takes. He’s got a good frame of mind, and he’s willing to compete.”

Fisher declined to say where Young fits on the Titans depth chart, especially since he is currently the only quarterback Tennessee has under contract. However, the Titans are working to re-sign Collins, who would be their starter and have also been in discussions with representatives for Simms, who could work his way into the No. 2 role in training camp if he re-signs.

Asked what Young needs to do to get himself on track to regain the starting role, Fisher replied, “Come in there and work to improve his fundamentals and do what every other player does, come in here and try to improve on the field, in the weight room and in the classroom.”

Fisher reiterated what he said at the end of the season that he expects Young, who spent last off-season in class at the University of Texas, to be a full participant in the Titans' off-season work.

Fisher said the Titans have no intentions of using Young as anything but a quarterback, ruling out trickery in the wild cat formation.

As for Simms, general manager Mike Reinfeldt said he has already met with agent Tom Condon and begun the process of trying to get Simms re-signed as well.

SURGERY: Cornerback Nick Harper underwent successful abdominal surgery recently, as the injury was causing pain in the leg area and down to his ankle, according to his agent Ian Greengross.

Harper should be full speed by the time training camp opens.

NOT TRUE: A report on ESPN.com surfaced that the Titans had re-signed receiver Justin McCareins to a one-year deal. However, Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt said he has not had any conversations with McCareins' agent, Cliff Brady.

Brady also said no deal had been done.
