Nearly 30 members of the Music City Young Marines program will travel to Parris Island, South Carolina, later this month for a glimpse of life on a Marine base.
The Young Marines Program started in 1958 in Waterbury, Conn., is designed to give boys and girls, ages 8 to 18, an alternative to using drugs and being in gangs.
According to Anthony Westbrooks, who is in charge of the local chapter, the program gives young people the opportunity to experience a 13-week long boot camp in addition to playing the roles of Marines.
The young people meet every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marines Corps. Training Center on White Bridge Road to participate in drills as well as take classes on a variety of subjects from CPR to Marine history.
