The completion date for the Shelby Street pedestrian bridge has been moved back one year from the original target finish, with Ray Bell Construction Company having begun the final phase of the renovation project two weeks ago, according to project officials.
Bill Moore, chief engineer for the Tennessee Department of Transportation, said the project is slated for completion in August 2003. Originally, TDOT (which funnels federal monies to state municipalities when bridge work is involved) and Metro Public Works Department officials had hoped to finish the job this time next year. However, delays due to weather and from Lockwood Construction Company, the Franklin-based firm handling Phase II of the job, have stalled the roughly $12 million project.
