Thompson, a second-year safety out of Washington State, joined the Titans on Sept. 3 after being released by Cincinnati. Thompson spent his rookie season with the Bengals, after being selected in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. Thompson's main contributions for the Titans have been on special teams. He recently walked out as one of three team captains prior to the Buffalo Bills game last Sunday.
Q: How did you get chosen to be one of the three team captains [last Sunday]?
A: During pre-game warm-ups, coach Fisher called my name and I just ran up there. I didn't really know why, but I went ahead up there with the captains. It was unexpected, but I went out there with pride and I'm glad he picked me to be captain for a day.
Q: How satisfying has it been this season compared to last, when you were with Cincinnati?
A: It's very satisfying, playing for a team that has one common goal, and that's to win for each other. Everybody has to hold themselves accountable. This is my kind of team.
Q: You play a lot on special teams, and it's been well-documented the struggles the unit had against Indianapolis. Did you guys lose any confidence or pride and how do you get that back?
A: It wasn't a matter of losing confidence as much as it was just executing the game plan the coaches were giving us during the week. Pride from each individual on the unit was definitely hurt, and it made us realize we have to take advantage of each opportunity out there and have a sense of urgency to get the job done now.
Q: Do you take a leadership role on special teams?
A: I'm not necessarily one of the vocal leaders, but I try to lead by example. When it's time, I will step up and say something. But that's not my role yet.
Q: You are one of the few players in the NFL that has hair coming out the back of your helmet. Do your teammates give you a hard time about it?
A: Tony Beckham, he usually makes fun of me about my hair. He's always saying something about it. Most of the time, I don't even think about it, except [against Buffalo] a couple of their guys were pulling at it in the pile.
Q: Is the hair real or are there extensions?
A: It's all natural, baby.
