Nashville gets another basketball team?

The city of Nashville will have a charter franchise in the United States Basketball Association, the league announced Tuesday.

Nashville is currently home to the Nashville Broncs, who despite a change in ownership, wrapped up its first season here in March.

The USBA is based in Atlanta and has franchises in Atlanta; Birmingham, Montgomery, Ala.; Richmond, Va.; Savannah, Ga.; Columbia, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Augusta, Ga. and in Huntington, W.V.

The schedule will consist of 20 games; (10 home, 10 away), the league said.

Named the Nashville Thunder, the team will play its home games at Tennessee State University’s Gentry Center, and will be coached by Eric Vaughn.

Most recently, Vaughn was the boys’ basketball coach at Keystone High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana and has previous professional experience with the Ft. Wayne Fury and the Gary Steelheads of the Continental Basketball Association.

“I am very honored to have been given a chance to be a head coach at the professional level. We will bring an exciting brand of basketball to the Nashville area that is fan friendly and affordable as well,” Vaughn said.

The season and home opener is set for Saturday May 9 at the Gentry Center against the Augusta Raging River. Tip time is set for 7:35.
