UPDATED AND CORRECTED:
A man was shot and killed outside the Gentry Center on the Tennessee State University campus Monday night following the commencement ceremony for Maplewood High, according to Metro Police.
Metro Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Andreus Taylor, who was apparently shot in the face at close range as he was exiting the center. He died a short while later at Centennial Medical Center, according to police.
A bystander was also shot in the arm and was treated at a nearby hospital. The shooting occured as the crowd, which included Maplewood graduates, was exiting the center immediately following graduation exercises, according to reports.
Early accounts said no Maplewood graduate was involved in the violence, although minor injuries were reported when the crowd scrambled after shots were fired. Police estimated the commencement audience at 4,000 and said a total of 12 on- and off-duty Metro Police and TSU officers were inside and outside the Gentry Center.
Metro Police initally said a suspect was in custody following a chase on foot by TSU security officers, but that person was not connected to the shooting.
A police spokesman said there was no clear motive for the shooting but that the victim did have gang ties.
