Darshawn McClellan’s tip-in at the buzzer left Vanderbilt one point short in an 84-83 loss to the Wollongong Hawks on Friday in Sydney.
The Commodores led by 10 points (79-69) with five minutes to play but were behind by three when Andre Walker stole an inbounds pass with three seconds to play. Walker’s 3-point attempt missed and was tipped in by McClellan for the final score.
The loss was the first for VU in its five-game exhibition tour of Australia.
A.J. Ogilvy led the Commodores with 21 points and six rebounds. Jeffery Taylor made seven of 11 field goal attempts and finished with 17 points. Brad Tinsley made four of six 3-pointers and scored 16 points in addition to a team-high seven assists.
“It was really a gritty effort by our guys,” coach Kevin Stallings said in a blog on the school’s athletics website. “They played with great intensity and physicality throughout the game. Although I am disappointed we lost, I was much more pleased with our effort against the best competition we have seen on the trip.”
Vanderbilt plays its final game of the trip Sunday.
