Metro Police have made an arrest in the fatal shooting of Ryan M. Wright on Wednesday in the Una area of Nashville. They say illegal drug activity appears to be the motive in the murder.
Derek Lee White, 20, faces charges of murder, attempted murder and two counts of aggravated robbery, police said. He was taken into custody at his Luann Drive home without incident Thursday night.
Police say Wright and his friend, Michael T. Schamberg, who are both 22 and live in the area, were shot at Schamberg’s Chevrolet Tahoe at the intersection of Sleepy Hollow Drive and Rychen Drive.
When officers responded to a call of shots fired, they found Wright on the ground suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper torso. He died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Schamberg was in the driver’s seat of the SUV suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He, while recovering at Vanderbilt, identified White as a suspect, police said.
Police say Schamberg and Wright picked up White and another man so that White could repay a debt to Schamberg. But White and the accomplice allegedly pulled guns as part of the attempted robbery. When Schamberg stopped at Sleepy Hollow Drive and Rychen Drive, all four men got out, and Wright and Schamberg were shot.
The gunmen fled in a car that was following the SUV.
At the time of the incident, White was free on $35,000 bond in regard to felony drug and gun charges from June of this year.
The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are expected.
