Jordan Coleman scored a career-high 17 points as Vanderbilt easily defeated Austin Peay 95-51  Friday in the opening game of VU’s Thanksgiving women’s basketball tournament.
A sophomore forward from Orlando, Fla., Coleman made five of eight field goal attempts and all seven of her free throws. Her previous single-game best was eight points, in the season-opener against Lehigh.
It was the third time this season No. 21 Vanderbilt (5-0) topped 90 points. As a team, the Commodores shot 51.5 percent from the field and registered assists on 22 of their 35 baskets. Junior Jence Roads set a career-high with 11 assists in addition to 10 points and three steals.
Coleman had four points in the Commodores’ 21-0 run to open the second half. They led 35-29 at intermission and held Austin Peay (1-4) scoreless for the first 4:52 of the second half.
Merideth Marsh started the run with a 3-pointer 11 seconds into the half. She added two more 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes and finished with 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
Hannah Tuomi made a team-high seven field goals and chipped in 15 points.
Austin Peay led by as many as seven (19-12) in the first half but was ultimately committed more turnovers (28) than it made baskets (18). Ashley Herring led the Lady Govs with 21 points.
