A.J. Ogilvy made 11 of 13 free throws and scored a season-high 27 points as No. 17 Vanderbilt defeated Ole Miss 82-78  Thursday at Tad Smith Coliseum in Oxford, Miss.
The junior center made his final 10 foul shots over the final 6:10. He also made eight of 10 field goal attempts. It was the fifth time this season he scored 20 or more but the first since he had 22 against South Carolina Jan. 16.
As a team, the Commodores (20-5, 9-2 in the SEC) made as many free throws as field goals (26). They went ahead to stay when John Jenkins’ jump shot with 5:09 to play made it 61-60. After that, they scored 17 of their final 21 shots from the foul line.
Ogilvy and sophomore forward Jeffery Taylor combined to score Vanderbilt’s first 21 points. Jenkins became the third VU player to score when he made a jump shot with 4:25 remaining in the first half.
Taylor was 8 for 11 from the field and finished with 19 points. Jermaine Beal made nine of 10 foul shots and scored 14 points, all in the second half. Jenkins finished with eight points in 23 minutes off the bench.
Chris Warren had a team-high 23 points for Ole Miss (17-8, 5-6), which led by as many as 10 in the early going and by five with fewer than 11 minutes to play.
Vanderbilt’s next game is 5 p.m. Saturday at home against No. 2 Kentucky at Memorial Gymnasium. ESPN will broadcast that contest.
