Former Vanderbilt pitcher Mike Minor matched a long-standing franchise record when he struck out 12 for the Atlanta Braves in a 16-5 victory [1] over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Minor, in his third Major League start, matched the franchise record for strikeouts by a rookie originally set in 1960 by George Brunet and matched three years later by Bob Sadowski, both of whom played for the Boston Braves. Tommy Hanson struck out 11 last season, which had been the most by an Atlanta Braves rookie.
Ten of the first 12 Cubs’ outs came on strikeouts.
Minor left after the sixth inning (the third straight time he has done so), which he ended with his final strikeout. He threw a total of 104 pitches, 71 of them strike.
The seventh overall draft pick in 2009 allowed seven hits and three runs and walked just one as he improved to 2-0 for the Braves.
