Blake Geoffrion had three points, including the final goal, as the Nashville Predators defeated the Florida Panthers 5-0 in a rookie scrimmage Wednesday in Florida.
Geoffrion, a first-year professional following a four-year career at Wisconsin, had a goal and two assists and led three players who had multi-point performances. Forward Taylor Beck, a third-round pick in 2009, had two goals (both on the power play) and defenseman Ryan Ellis, the team’s top choice in 2009, added a goal and an assist.
Ellis’ unassisted goal in the first period was the game-winner.
Goalies Chet Pickard and Anders Lindback combined for the shutout.
The format also called for the teams to compete in a shootout, regardless of the outcome. The Predators won the shootout 2-1 on conversions by Austin Watson, their first-round pick this summer, and Mark Santorelli. Nashville recently traded Santorelli’s older brother, Mike, to Florida.
The teams will compete in another rookie scrimmage Thursday morning. The Predators’ prospects will return home immediately afterward and will be on the ice with the veterans Friday morning for the official start of training camp.
