Hillwood upended McGavock to win the District 12-AAA volleyball tournament on a day that also saw McGavock end an impressive Glencliff streak.
Behind tournament MVP Kennetha Wallace, Hillwood, with its best team in years, beat McGavock 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 in the finals Wednesday at Overton High. Both advance to the Region 6-AAA tourney next Tuesday at McGavock.
In a two-hour semifinal marathon, McGavock beat Glenciff 19-25, 25-20, 15-25, 36-34, 15-9. Glencliff lost a handful of match points in the lengthy fourth game. Hillwood beat host Overton 25-17, 25-9, 25-23 in the other semis.
Only twice in Coach Glenn Falls’ 29 years as coach has Glencliff failed to reach the region tournament – 2007 and this year. And it marked only the fourth time that Falls’ teams have not won the district. Glencliff had a streak of 19 straight titles (1987-2006) at one point.
Hendersonville won its first state golf team championship as the Class AAA boys tournament wound up Wednesday at Willowbrook Course in Manchester.
The Commandos were led by Kevin Lee, who shot a 68-73 –141 and finished in a tie for second.
In the girls division, Ravenwood finished second to Soddy Daisy for the second straight year. Defending champ Taylor Manning of Ravenwood shot a 79-74 – 153 and finished in a four-way tie for seventh in individuals.
