Ensworth charged back from two games down against Memphis St. Agnes and won its first-round state tournament volleyball match Wednesday at Blackman High School.
The Tigers rallied for a 19-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-10 decision and advanced to meet St. Benedict in the winners bracket finals, 1 p.m. Thursday at MTSU.
The Tigers need two more wins to capture the school’s first volleyball title. St. Benedict beat Baylor in three close games.
In Class AA, Goodpasture won two matches and reached the semifinals, where it will face Page, 1 p.m. Thursday at Blackman.
Page has won four state titles and was runner-up last year. Goodpasture trounced East Ridge in three straight games, then beat Dyersburg in four games in the semis.
In a showdown of state powerhouses in Class AAA, Ravenwood rallied from a game down and defeated defending state champ Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett 20-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17.
Siegel beat Independence in five tough games, which dropped the Eagles into the losers bracket. Ravenwood meets Siegel, 1 p.m. Thursday at at Siegel.
All finals are Friday.
• Region soccer: Franklin Road Academy toppled USN 1-0 and won the DII-A Middle/East Region tournament title as Christine Matthews scored the lone goal for the Panthers.
FRA will host St. George’s in the Sectionals, 6 p.m. Saturday, with a trip to state awaiting the winner.
In DII-AA Sectionals Saturday, it’s BGA at St. Benedict, Briarcrest at Pope JPII, Ryan at St. Agnes and Brentwood Academy at Baylor. Winners advance to state.
In the Region 6-AAA semifinals Tuesday, Franklin crushed McGavock 11-0, and Ravenwood blanked Overton 8-0.
Franklin hosts Ravenwood in the finals Thursday. The Class 5-A/AA region semifinal matches were postponed from Tuesday.
