A married couple is dead after a fire in Antioch tore through a mobile home Tuesday evening.
As fire crews responded to the blaze, which was reported shortly after 7 p.m., neighbors tried in vain to rescue the two inside the mobile home at Waikiki Boulevard (originally reported as 23 Diamondhead Court).
Authorities have tentatively identified the two as Lindel Payton, 66 and his wife, Marie Payton, 63.
The first engines on the scene found heavy smoke and flames, said Deputy Chief Ricky Taylor. Some fire personnel worked to contained the fire while others entered the home in a rescue attempt.
Firemen quickly located one victim, Taylor said, but it took several minutes to locate the other. Both were dead at the scene.
Taylor said while the investigation is still in the early stages, both the fire and police departments are jointly investigating the cause of the fire. He said the fire “practically destroyed” the mobile home down to its frame.
Late Tuesday night investigators were working to eliminate alternate heat sources or cooking as possible causes of the fire. Foul play is not suspected.
No other nearby units were damaged, but a fire captain was bruised when an aerosol can from the kitchen hit him as he entered the mobile home. He was treated at the scene.
