The Tennessee Titans are one of eight NFL teams scheduled to conduct a private workout with Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton, according to NFL.com [1].
Tennessee has the eighth overall pick and is in need of a quarterback. Vince Young will be traded and released and Kerry Collins’ contract is up.
No date was given for the Titans’ workout. According to the report, the workout will be conducted at an undisclosed location.
Coach Mike Munchak has said that the team likely will add a veteran quarterback and draft one. Neither he nor General Manager Mike Reinfeldt have committed to using the first-round pick to get one.
No transactions can be finalized at present, however, because league owners and the NFL Players Association continue to negotiate the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement.
There remain the possibilities that the owners could lock out the players or that the players union could decertify in order to file anti-trust against the league. Either development would bring all league business to a halt.
“You’re going to consider all your options by how much time you have and what the situation is,” Munchak said recently. “We’re going to have to be able to adjust. Maybe there won’t be any kind of lockout. You just don’t know.
“We have to be ready for the best situation, or the worst situation where things don’t get settled until much later.”
Newton took part in the NFL scouting combine last month and was one of the star attractions at Auburn’s pro day on Tuesday.
“I wanted to show everyone what I have been working on since day one,” Newton aid following his workout. “"I didn't feel any pressure. I just wanted to come out here to have fun and compete, because that is the name of the game.”
