The Nashville Predators claimed a pair of top prizes, while the Tennessee Titans were recognized for some big moments Wednesday at the Nashville Sports Council’s 13th Annual Pepsi Celebration of Champions, which was held for the first time at the Grand Ole Opry House.
Nashville captain Shea Weber was named the Sports Person of the Year, and rookie Blake Geoffrion, the first Tennessee-raised player to make it to the NHL, was named the Ed Temple Amateur Male Athlete of the Year. Geoffrion was the 2010 Hobey Baker Award winner as the top player in college hockey.
Chris Johnson’s 2,000-yard rushing season, which he concluded Jan. 3, 2010, at Seattle, was named the top sports moment. Kenny Britt’s breakout performance (225 yards and three touchdowns) last Oct. 24 against Philadelphia also made the top 10, a list which included a pair of high school football state championships and the controversial finish to the Music City Bowl involving North Carolina and Tennessee.
