The Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency announced Thursday work will begin May 18 on a streetscape project in a key segment of the North Gulch.
The $444,000 project will includes sidewalks and street lighting, among other improvements, and will incorporate a geographic area bordered by McGavock Street between 11th and 13th avenues south and along 12th Avenue South from just south of Broadway to Demonbreun Street.
The project will include eight phases in order to minimize the impact of the work to area motorists and businesses, MDHA said in a release. The first phase of work will take place on McGavock between 12th and 13th avenues south. Each phase will require at least two weeks to complete. The second phase of work will be along 12th Avenue South between McGavock and Demonbreun.
The segment of McGavock between 11th and 12th avenues is home to three popular dining and drinking establishments owned and operated by MStreet Entertainment Group: Kayne Prime, Virago and Whiskey Kitchen.
Julie Oaks, MDHA spokeswoman, said the agency wants to create a seamless transition from the established Gulch to the emerging North Gulch, the southern boundary of which, in general, is Demonbreun. The North Gulch has garnered attention of late, with Kayne Prime having just opened and Atlanta-based TriBridge Residential recently announcing its Eleven North apartments project at 11th and Charlotte avenues.
During the streetscape improvement project, crews will replace sidewalks, install new street lighting and mill and pave along McGavock. In addition, crews will replace sidewalks and pave along 12th Avenue South.
Also, workers will plant nearly 40 trees and make other landscaping improvements throughout the project site. When work is complete in the fall, the project area will have streetscape appearance consistent with those streets in the Gulch. The contractor will coordinate work times with area businesses in order to avoid peak travel times in the area.
K-Barr Group, LLC, will serves as the contractor on the $444,000 project.
