Vanderbilt’s John Jenkins is one of 22 players who will compete for 12 spots on the United States men’s junior national team, which will compete later this summer at the World University Games.
University of Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin will be an assistant coach for the team.
Jenkins, a rising junior, accepted an invitation from USA Basketball to take part in training camp, July 29-Aug. 7 at Colorado Springs, Colo. The guard led the Southeastern Conference in scoring (19.1 points per game) and 3-pointers (3.1 per contest) and was a consensus All-SEC first-team selection last season.
Three other SEC players will take part in the camp. They are JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell of Alabama, and Darius Miller of Kentucky. Green is one of five among the group with previous USA Basketball experience.
The final roster will be announced July 31 and the team will compete at the 2011 World University Games, Aug. 13-23 in Shenzhen, China.
Purdue coach Matt Painter will be head coach of the U.S. team. Martin and Butler’s Brad Stevens will be the assistant coaches.
