Former Montgomery Bell Academy standout player and Big Red coach Jonas Rodriguez has taken the position as defensive co-ordinator at Ensworth High.
Rodriguez, 30, will rejoin his former MBA coach, Ricky Bowers, the head coach at Ensworth, on the staff of the defending DII state football champs.
Rodriguez had coached for three years with Daniel McGugin, who lost his head coaching position at MBA in April.
“It’s a great opportunity for me, getting a chance to coach with coach Bowers, whom I played for [at MBA] and whom I greatly respect,’’ Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez played on state champion teams in 1999 and 2000 as well as on the 2000 state champion basketball team under Bowers. He was a four-year letterman at Yale as a running back/defensive back.
“I was in the running for the head coaching job at BGA, and when I didn’t get that, the Ensworth job opened, and things worked out great,’’ he said.
Rodriguez’s good friend McGugin said recently he may pursue a job in either the private sector or even continue in the coaching profession. The two coached at FRA together in 2004-05, then three seasons at MBA where Rodriguez was the defensive co-ordinator.
