Fabian Bedne edged James Widrig Thursday to become the first Hispanic to win a seat on the Metro Council since the body was formed in 1963.
Bedne, of Argentinean descent, won the race for south Davidson County's District 31 by a 683-617 margin.
Throughout the campaign, Bedne downplayed his Latin American heritage, saying he wanted to represent all citizens living in the ethnically diverse District 31.
"I think it speaks very well of Nashville," Bedne said. "People looked at my qualifications and my track record. I don't think my background played a major role in the race. People want somebody who will work for them and who they can trust."
