The Internal Revenue Service is seeking volunteers as well as partnering organizations for two programs aimed at tax assistance and also a counseling program.
Volunteers and partners are needed for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly programs to help prepare federal income tax returns in Middle Tennessee communities during the 2012 tax-filing season.
VITA and TCE volunteers would provide free tax preparation and e-filing for seniors, military personnel and taxpayers with low- to moderate-incomes (generally, less than $50,000) who need help filing their tax returns.
The programs’ sites are typically located in community centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls and other locations, and are normally open evenings and weekends during the tax-filing season.
Volunteer positions such as tax preparers, greeters, recruiters and equipment coordinators are all available. Volunteers come from all walks of life, including retirees and college students, and prior tax experience is not needed.
Training and certification are conducted at several locations as well as online.
