Trevecca Nazarene is starting off the new year on top.
The Trojans are ranked No. 1 in the latest National Christian College Athletic Association Division I men’s basketball rankings, which were released on Tuesday.
They are 10-5, have won five of their last six and received a 9.63 on the Burbridge Power Rating scale. The formula uses a point system to rank the 64 member schools and gives points based on wins, road wins, games against winning teams and games against schools from other affiliations (NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA Division II, etc.).
Trevecca is currently a member of the NCCAA, which governs postseason tournaments only, as it transitions out of the NAIA and into NCAA Division II.
Senior guard Michael France ranks third in the NCCAA with 21.6 points per game and is the current TranSouth Athletic Conference’s Player of the Week, after averaging 29 points in two wins last week.
France, a native of Shelbyville, scored a season-high 38 points and made seven 3-pointers against Blue Mountain College on Saturday.
The Trojans are 2-0 in league play and are tied with Cumberland atop the TranSouth standings. Since Trevecca is leaving the NAIA, the school is not eligible for TranSouth regular-season and postseason championships.
Trevecca plays at Bethel at 8 p.m. Thursday before hosting Cumberland at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
