Three days removed from an emotional victory over No. 11 Tennessee, Vanderbilt couldn’t keep the momentum — and its five-game road win streak came to a screeching halt.
The Commodores lost at No. 21 Georgia 76-63 on Sunday, falling for the first time since a loss to South Carolina on Jan. 22. Vanderbilt (19-6, 7-5 in the SEC) began the winning streak with a win over Georgia at home on Jan. 26.
The Commodores had won eight of the previous nine games against the Bulldogs (19-6, 8-4).
This time, Georgia dominated from the start, never allowing Vanderbilt to tie or lead. The Commodores fell behind 10-2 over the first five minutes as they missed six of their first seven shots.
They shot 46.4 percent from the field but 19 turnovers doomed them and led to 26 Georgia points. The Bulldogs grabbed an 18-point lead with 15:37 remaining but Vanderbilt clawed back.
Georgia scored just one point in a five-minute stretch and Christina Foggie’s 3-pointer at the 10:07 mark capped a 14-1 Commodore run and cut the deficit to five. But the Bulldogs scored seven straight points to stave off the threat.
“Our communication wasn't good to start the game,” Vanderbilt coach Melanie Balcomb said. “I think our mental toughness was one of the things that we were struggling with on the road before we won our last two games. But this is the first Sunday game in a big environment; we've won Thursday night games in that environment. I think we lost some focus tonight. We're going to have to become a better team on the road still. I think they need to figure it out on the road."
Foggie led Vanderbilt with 22 points, scoring 15 after halftime. Stephanie Holzer scored all 12 of her points in the first half and Tiffany Clarke scored 10 of her 11 points in the second half. Atlanta native Elan Brown just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Anne Marie Armstrong, who scored a game-high 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting, led Georgia. Jasmine Hassell had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Vanderbilt returns home for a Thursday night game against Florida.
