Metro police arrested the man they believe stabbed his girlfriend inside his Cleveland Street duplex.
Geraldo A. Rivas, 57, now faces an arrest warrant charging him with attempted murder of 53-year-old Karen Woodard, who was stabbed in her abdomen and legs. After receiving information regarding Rivas' location, police took him into custody in the rear parking lot of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant on Rosa L. Parks Boulevard.
Detectives believe Rivas left the duplex around midnight. Around 5:45 a.m. Monday, Woodard, who was apparently locked inside the residence, was able to get the attention of a neighbor by banging on the wall. The neighbor then called 9-1-1, and the fire department had to force entry to rescue Woodard.
According to police, Rivas’ arrest history includes multiple convictions for crimes including aggravated assault, vehicle theft, unlawful weapon possession, burglary and patronizing prostitution.
Monday afternoon, Woodard was still being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for what police called "critical stab wounds."
