The Music City Bowl is returning to New Year’s Eve.
ESPN announced Monday that it would air the 15-year-old postseason football contest at 11 a.m., Dec. 31 — marking just the fifth time the game at LP Field has been played on the last day of the year.
“We believe this date will maximize fan travel and deliver high visibility on ESPN for the Franklin American Mortgage Company and the city of Nashville,” bowl chair Brad Lampley said. “Plus, combined with the other New Year’s Eve festivities in downtown Nashville, we have a chance to have a record number of out-of-town visitors in the city over a three-to-four day period. It should be one of the biggest New Year’s Eves in Nashville’s history, and the Bowl is thrilled to be part of it.”
Some of the bowl’s best attendance and economic numbers have come on New Year’s Eve dates. The 2007 game between Kentucky and Florida State produced the highest economic number — $27 million. The average attendance on New Year’s Eve is 61,027, which is 11 percent higher than the historical average. The average TV rating on ESPN on Dec. 31 is 3.2 — 10 percent higher.
The 2012 game will mark the seventh Music City Bowl matchup between an SEC and ACC foe. Last year, Mississippi State defeated Wake Forest 23-17 in front of a crowd of 55,208.
Renewals for 2012 ticket holders will be sent in May and tickets will go on sale to the public through Ticketmaster on August 31. Premium ticket packages are currently available, which include prime ticket locations, hospitality benefits and corporate exposure.
