A former Metro Nashville Police Department officer and his co-defendant were sentenced yesterday in connection with fraud and money laundering charges.
Richard Wilson, 32, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for federal program fraud and Michael Dwayne Wray, 32, was sentenced to five years for money laundering.
Wilson was indicted last June [1] for providing assistance to drug traffickers. He received $24,500 for transporting what he believed to be cocaine and drug money to locations around Nashville. Investigators found that Wilson was on duty, in uniform and in an official police car while committing the crime.
The Metro Nashville Police Department promptly decommissioned Wilson following the charges. Wilson resigned from the department a month later.
Wray entered a plea agreement detailing a June 2011 transaction between Wilson and an undercover FBI agent. Wilson delivered what he believed to be cocaine to undercover agents in a Nashville hotel and received $5,000 in cash. Wray assisted Wilson during the transaction.
Both men pleaded guilty in January.
A third defendant in the case, Adam Yates, also entered a plea agreement in January. He has a sentencing hearing scheduled for June 11.
