Kenny Britt was slowed by injury at the start of last year’s training camp.
He’ll start this year's at a virtual standstill.
Britt and rookie safety Markelle Martin each were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list for the start of training camp. The first practice, which is closed to the public, is Saturday. The first one that is open to fans is Sunday.
A spot on the PUP list does not necessarily affect a player’s status for the start of the regular season. Britt and Martin are on it because of issues related to knee injuries and will come off — and be free to work out with the rest of the team — once they pass physicals.
Titans coaches and medical staff were cautious with Britt last summer because of the lingering effects of a hamstring injury sustained during the 2010 season. He sat out occasional practices and played in only one of the four preseason games … and only briefly in that one.
He caught three touchdown passes and averaged 135.5 yards receiving through the first two regular-season games, however. He caught three more in Week 3 before he sustained a season-ending knee injury, which required a pair of surgeries. Recently, he also underwent a minor procedure on his other knee.
Regardless of his health the fourth-year wide receiver might miss the start of the 2012 season. He faces the possibility of a suspension for violation of the league’s personal conduct policy after he was taken into custody last week and charged with drunk driving at Fort Campbell.
Martin, a sixth-round pick out of Oklahoma State sustained a knee injury during a January workout and underwent surgery. The issue delayed any pre-draft workouts until two weeks before the event and likely caused him to drop from the middle rounds to the later ones.
His workload during rookie orientation and offseason workouts also was limited.
Briefly
• The Titans waived undrafted rookie offensive lineman Chandler Burden. The 6-foot-4, 313-pounder started every game at left tackle for Kentucky last season after having missed all of 2010 with an injury.
Currently there are 88 players, two short of the maximum for the start of training camp, on the roster.
