The Tennessee Titans made moves with two injured players and released 11 others Sunday as they reduced their preseason roster to 75 players.
Wide receiver/returner Marc Mariani was placed on injured reserve with the broken leg he sustained in Thursday’s preseason victory against Arizona. Mariani needed surgery to repair multiple fractures to his lower left leg.
Rookie safety Markelle Martin was transferred to the reserve/physically unable to perform list. The sixth-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State missed all of training camp because of offseason knee surgery.
The moves mean Mariani will miss the entire season and Martin will sit out at least the first six weeks of the regular season.
There were no surprises among those who were cut: They were: punter/kicker Will Batson, guard George Bias, wide receiver Chase Deadder, running back Herb Donaldson, wide receiver LaQuinton Evans, wide receiver Marcus Harris, tight end Joey Haynos, tackle Jonathan Palmer, safety Christian Scott, quarterback Nick Stephens and center William Vlachos.
Veteran defensive tackle Shaun Smith was waived last week.
“Some guys obviously came in that knew it was going to be a long shot, that needed a couple of breaks to make it because of their situation,” coach Mike Munchak said. “It’s not a surprise probably, but it’s still disappointing when you actually hear someone tell you that it’s not going to work this year.
“The good thing is some of these guys have a chance because of the practice squad, positions open up later. They have a chance to develop on that.”
League rules mandate that all teams must be down to at least 75 players by Monday afternoon. They must be down to the regular season limit of 53 by Friday.
“This is a tough week,” Munchak said. “The next seven days are toughest probably in the NFL for players. I guess they realize what a business it really is. You tell them when they first come in April that there are 90 of you guys here, and only 53 can make the team. I think it doesn’t sink in until this time of year.
“Cutting 12 guys was hard from the roster. Obviously everyone knows that by next weekend or next Friday night we have to be down to 53.”
