Police have identified 83-year-old Martha Short as the woman who died after an apparent accident involving a grocery store escalator Wednesday afternoon.
According to police, the incident happened just after 3 p.m. in the Harris Teeter store at 4416 Ridgefield Way when Short inadvertently placed her shopping cart on an escalator meant for pedestrians rather than on another used for carts.
As Short tried to go from the main level down to the parking garage, her cart rolled forward causing her to fall down the escalator. She was transported to St. Thomas Hospital but later died.
