Dowling Armstrong, a two-state golf champion, has announced he will sign a national letter-of-intent with Lipscomb University. He is one of the top players in the state.
The Lipscomb Academy senior made his commitment just after the university hired former PGA star and ex-Lipscomb All-American Will Brewer as its coach on Sept. 4.
“A big part of my decision was when they hired Will Brewer as the coach,” Armstrong said. “He has a vast knowledge of the game and he’s been helpful with tips for me during the years.
“The most important reason I chose Lipscomb was the fact it’s a Christian school and I’ll be surrounded by Christian people. This, along with all the guys on the team having the same values as I do.”
Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Memphis, which offered a full scholarship, and East Tennessee State all recruited Armstrong, who will go for his third straight individual state title later this month.
As a sophomore, he won the Georgia state crown with Georgia Christian, where he shot a state record 67.
He then moved to Nashville and as a junior last year and shot a six-under par 138 over two days to win the championship by two shots. Armstrong’s younger brother, Dawson, finished tied for ninth, and Lipscomb finished second in the team competition.
