Corn Elder, a 2,000-yard rusher, was one of two Enworth players among a handful of area athletes named Mr. Football finalists on Thursday, the TSSAA announced.
Elder is a finalist for the Division II-AA back of the year, which he won in 2011. Teammate Michael Sawyers was named a finalist for lineman of the year.
The pair hopes to lead the 10-0 Tigers, who are 14th in the latest USA Today Super 25 prep rankings, to a third straight state title. After a first-round bye, Ensworth hosts McCallie in a DII-AA quarterfinal contest Friday.
Elder and Sawyers will vie for their respective honors with a Brentwood Academy player. BA’s Jalen Ramsey is one of the other two back finalists, and Derek Barnett is a lineman finalist.
Brentwood High tackle Logan Teichmann was named a finalist for Class AAA lineman of the year.
Winners in all classes will be announced at a luncheon, 11 a.m. Nov. 26 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Murfreesboro.
