Marina Alex, a two-time All-American at Vanderbilt, earned provisional qualifier status on the LPGA Tour for 2013 with a 27th place finish Wednesday in her first attempt at the tour’s qualifying school.
The top 20 finishers earned full-time status for next season. By virtue of her finish, Alex effectively is the seventh alternate for all events that don’t fill their field of 144. She also is guaranteed a spot on the Symetra Tour, the LPGA’s developmental circuit.
"Q-School was good, but it was the hardest thing I've ever done," Alex said. It was stressful. In college or as an amateur, you qualify for one event, but in this case, I was qualifying for my entire year — where you play the year out. Every round is important. I played a lot more conservative, more on edge. I took on a lot less risk. You gladly take par, get the birdies where you can get them, but you try not to make big numbers."
An All-American in 2010 and 2012 was 1-under par for the five-round Q-school event at Daytona Beach, Fla. Her best round was the fourth when she shot a 67 (5-under). She finished with a 73 (1-over) in the final round.
"I haven't decided yet what to do," Alex said. "There have been many players who have earned their LPGA card by easing into an LPGA schedule in a position like mine and there have been players who earned full status at Q-School and never made it past their first year. Everything happens for a reason, so we'll see what happens. But, I'm excited."
