The early morning break-in and vandalism of the Al-Farooq Islamic Center on 4th Avenue South is not believed to have been a planned crime, according to Metro Nashville Police Department chief Steve Anderson.
Kyler Wilson, 27, was arrested on Monday morning for damaging items inside the mosque. A cab driver found Wilson, wearing only boxer shorts, inside a car parked at the Islamic Center. Wilson allegedly broke into the building and overturned several items including a water cooler, vending machine and a microwave.
Police said Wilson was cooperative when they found him sleeping inside a car at another business at 1500 2nd Avenue South.
Wilson told police he had been drinking heavily the night before and had no animosity toward any religion or group. He is being charged with burglary and felony vandalism.
The Al-Farooq Islamic Center was vandalized in 2010 with anti-Muslim graffiti. There was no graffiti found in the mosque on Monday.
