Timing is everything, and Adela Franco could not have picked a better time to take – and make – her only field goal attempt.
Franco, a freshman, made a 3-pointer at the buzzer that lifted Christ Presbyterian Academy to a 52-49 victory over Macon County and a second straight TSSAA Class AA girls state championship Saturday at Murfreesboro.
CPA (30-7) trailed by 11 with 2:31 to play in the third quarter but outscored Macon County 20-6 the rest of the way. The Lions fell behind in the final minute of the first quarter and did not lead again Lauren Thompson’s jumper made it 49-47 with 3:29 to play.
Thompson scored 10 of her team’s final 20 points and was named the MVP of the state tournament for the second consecutive year. The Belmont signee finished with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds.
Faith LeGate started the rally with a pair of jump shots in the final two minutes of the third quarter. She finished with 12 points and nine rebounds. Meredith Roman added 13 points and five assists.
Franco’s only other points were a pair of first-quarter free throws. She finished with five points and five rebounds.
Macon County (30-5) got 13 points each from Kelsey Gregory and Terra Pryor as well as a double-double (10 points, 10 assists) from Kailyn Brooks.
