Trent Miller’s two-run double in the bottom of the first provided all the runs Middle Tennessee State needed Wednesday.
The Blue Raiders (12-10) added two more — one before the end of the first — and defeated second-ranked Vanderbilt 4-1 at Reese Smith Field in Murfreesboro.
The Commodores (19-3) had scored seven runs or more in 12 of their first 18 games managed just seven hits — all singles — against three MTSU pitchers. Their lone run came on shortstop Joel McKeithan’s RBI single in the sixth.
McKeithan and left fielder John Norwood, who scored the run, had two hits apiece.
MTSU shortstop Ryan Ford was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Miller added two hits and scored on designated hitter Michael Adkins’ double to make it 3-0 in the first.
Second baseman Johnny Thomas scored the Blue Raiders’ final run in the third. He reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a Miller single and scored on a passed ball.
Joey McClung, the Blue Raiders’ second pitcher, earned the win in 2.2 innings. He allowed three hits, struck out two and walked one. Starter Jordan Cooper pitched into the fifth and allowed twice as many walks (six) as hits (three).
Vanderbilt left 10 runners on base and hit into three double plays. They had hit into just eight double plays all season.
The Commodores host their first Southeastern Conference series of the season this weekend when Florida comes to town. They will play the Gators at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at noon Sunday.
MTSU hosts Louisiana in a Sun Belt Conference series. Games are 6 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
